Interactive Film Archive & Non-Profit Community
Challenge
The South Side Home Movie Project (SSHMP) is a film and cultural preservation project within the University of Chicago that is supported by Arts + Public Life and UChicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics, & Culture. The archive was in need of a new home as of 2021, where it could be easily acessed and engaged with by members of the community, archivists, scholars, and collaborative artists.
Solution
In collaboration with the design team at Span Studio (Chicago, https://span.studio), we were able to create a virtual space that showcases the archive 24/7, with high quality video and an immersive exhibit feel. Browsing and faceted search allow for exploration and research, while event listings keep the community engaged. As of 2023, community tools were added in order to give the public access to share their own experiences, tag films with historical data, and interact with the collections.
Results
The project has resulted in increased engagement from the community, including the addition of 6 new donated collections and a few dozen community accounts being created. Additionally, the site has earned a STA 100 award that recognises it as 1 of the top 100 typography examples of 2021 by the Society of Typographic Arts, and is currently a finalist for the Communication Arts 2023, Interactive shortlist.
