Challenge
The world of web design is changing once again. How so? Two words: web accessibility. What’s web accessibility? It’s the idea that a website is able to be accessed and used by everyone, regardless of ability. Cape Organization for Rights of the Disabled (CORD) is a non-profit organization that advances independent living for people with disabilities on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. As a leader in disability rights, it was critical their website was fully accessible.
Solution
CORD sought out the experts at 3 Media Web primarily because they were among the few who’d actually created fully accessible websites – and Robbie Moore was retained as the creative director. Baked In Accessibility Since this wasn’t the first web accessibility project, Robbie was able to “shift left” his knowledge of web accessibility design principles. What does that mean? Shift left means that web accessibility isn’t an afterthought in the design process, but “shifted left” in the production timeline – to the very beginning stages. Colors were accessible to people who are colorblind. Textures were minimized and the design simplified so people with cognitive disabilities wouldn’t have difficulty with the site.
Results
The end result is a new, bold, simple approach to web design that’s inclusive to all – from the very beginning – like is always should be.
