Challenge

California Olive Ranch is the #1 brand of domestically produced extra virgin olive oil in the United States. And while their award-winning craft oils have evolved over the decades, their branding didn’t. The Bay Area brand asked us to refresh the brand’s identity and packaging design, as well develop and define the brand’s voice.

Solution

California is central to the brand and the people who work for them. It’s where they farm their olives, make their oils, and call home. We took inspiration from this and their “roll up your sleeve” dedication and passion for what they do in reimagining how the brand looks and sounds. We created a new look that feels fresh and Californian while still being rooted back to the original labels to avoid confusion with loyal customers. We designed a modernized interpretation of their rancher logo, further emphasizing the care they put into everything they do and updated the color palette to feel vibrant and welcoming. We also developed a secondary color palette and special embellishments such as a gold foil, metallic ink, embossing, and premium papers to differentiate the different varietals and establish a hierarchy of product offerings.

Results

California Olive Ranch's market share rose over 20% within the first 6 months of the new label and packaging launch in early 2016. The olive oil is now sold at over 20,000 stores nationwide, including national retailers such as Target, Whole Foods, Costco, Kroger, Mariano's, Meijer, and you may have seen their olive oil in Xela packs served in first class on JetBlue.
