The Twin Rivers Unified School District
Challenge
The Twin Rivers Unified School District (TRUSD) wanted to develop an analytical system that would provide key performance indicator (KPI) data in an accessible format. TRUSD already recorded significant KPI data on a variety of different categories such as enrollment, attendance and assessments. The Twin Rivers Unified School District wanted to have a method to clearly and accurately view and digest this data. TRUSD contracted with Affirma to complete a business intelligence (BI) system that would display KPI data in multiple phases.
Solution
Twin Rivers Unified School District collaborated with Affirma to build an enterprise level SQL Server data warehouse. This involved consulting and reviewing dimensional modeling of existing data, reviewing current ETL scripts and developing new scripts as requested, consulting in the creation of reports and dashboards and finally conducting a full infrastructure review to support the enterprise data warehouse. At each step of the process, Affirma advised on best practices for the data warehouse. Affirma then worked towards providing a roadmap that details the necessary components and frameworks needed to achieve a best-in-class comprehensive analytics system. To ensure success, Affirma provided an internal project manager to ensure project scope, budget and timeline were followed. Affirma also conducted multiple on-site engagements as requested. This occurred once a month for a total of five months. Each visit lasted for the duration of a week. Affirma advised on self service capabilities and helped TRUSD with the development of SSAS OLAP cube.
Results
Upon completion of their consultative project, Twin Rivers Unified School District possessed a fully operational enterprise level data warehouse. The new data warehouse provided views into both a top, school, and student level reading, mathematics, attendance, discipline and grading data. Information such as the percentage of students meeting assessment expectations to the analysis of staff absences throughout the school district are now readily available through data warehouse. The data warehouse brought significant benefits to the Twin Rivers Unified School District. One example is faster and more direct access to KPI data such as attendance, assessment and enrollment. School administrators now have further insight into an individual school’s performances and can take necessary actions to foster improvement. TRUSD now has a better understanding of the data coming from their organization.
