Challenge

Back in the early 2000s, Discover Card faced a crisis. It was everyone's favorite "sock drawer" card... a good backup but left mostly unused except for emergencies. Additionally, other cards had adopted Discover's benefits and cash-back programs, leaving Discover Card with a dated 1980s identity and no real differentiation.

Solution

UpShift worked with VSA Partners and Ogilvy to update the brand identity—we scrapped the old, dated sunset logo for a clean sans serif font with a solid-orange "O" that referenced the sunset but modernized it. Then, UpShift created a fresh take on their advertising campaign that was resounding fresh in the market—and got Discover Card the attention it needed to promote its newly-refreshed benefits, rewards, and attention to service.

Results

Card usage went way up. HHI of card users also increased dramatically. Discover Card toward has a fresh, modern brand identity—and one of the industry's highest retention rates.
