The Big Bang Fair - Swimming In It
Challenge
The Big Bang Fair is the UK’s biggest festival of STEM for young people and exists to encourage more 11 – 18 year olds to choose STEM subjects and careers. In 2019, we saw a spike in entries to the Fair’s science competition about reducing plastic waste – and so we made this the focus of what became an incredibly successful idea.
Solution
We challenged two young professional synchronised swimmers to attempt their world championship routine in a swimming pool full of household plastic waste. Alongside this beautiful and shocking imagery, we championed the young people turning to STEM to find solutions to ocean plastic waste – shining a light on Big Bang Fair finalist Luke De Bretton-Gordon and his invention of edible water bottles, which could eradicate single-use plastic bottles.
