Reuters Insider video portal
Challenge
Reuters creates a vast amount of video everyday and aggregates video from several content partners. They realized that they needed an application that delivers video directly into financial professional and investor’s news and research workflows. They also wanted to simplify how hundreds of thousands of videos from several contributors are searched, discovered and navigated.
Solution
1. From Concept to Launch We saw the project from concept for build to delivery. We designed the User Experience keeping in mind the needs of professionals and investors and Thomson Reuters Eikon trading terminal style guides. 2. In-Person Collaboration with Iterative Sprints We worked closely with the Reuters team through multiple in-person collaborations with users and stakeholders. We collocated our delivery team of UX Design and Software Development and operated in rapid agile sprints to evolve the product through to launch. This enabled us to quickly incorporate feedback and increase our efficiency to create a video platform Reuters had envisioned. 3. Lean Delivery Approach Previous version of the application were developed in legacy technologies like Flash and were feature heavy we worked closely with stakeholders, the product team and prioritized features that would deliver the most value, and leverage a modern technology stack to ensure the ideal interactivity. 4. Integration with Kaltura API The project involved integrating with a third-party Online Video platform, Kaltura. This enabled a wide range of advanced video capabilities including an advanced video player, tagging and search capabilities. Features Curated Video Content We made trending news and top video news from popular topics directly available on the homepage. A source discovery feature is also included to allow users to browse news by sources such as CNBC, The Street and Forbes. Semantic Typing for Quick Search Simplifying content discovery was critical to allow users to find videos containing insights that mattered most to them. Semantic tagging technology was implemented to enable this, saving several minutes of interaction per session. Clickable Templates Valuable information was being mentioned in the videos, but it was locked up in video file formats. So we built a “clickable transcript” feature to unlock this content by converting the speech in the videos to text, and making the text searchable and clickable, to jump to a particular point of interest in the video.
Results
Since its launch the Reuters Insider Video portal is the most viewed video application across the Reuters financial video product line with millions of views and counting. Besides delivering on the user experience that the Reuters team had envisioned, the application has met the high standard of performance, reliability and uptime required of mission critical financial applications
