Packmojo
Challenge
PackMojo became our client after the recommendation of their UX Agency – Kalibre Digital. The co-founders, Wendy (mentioned on the Asia’s 30 before 30 list by Forbes) and Vincent came to them with the idea for a product, and on a way to bring it to life. The client’s main concern was how to create a perfect, user-friendly 3D designer, that’ll help their customers with bringing the package grids to life and translating them into a branded card box. The client came over to our company having the whole concept of the product in his head, having production facilities – they already had a factory, they were thoroughly consulted with it on how to work with it. They knew how to do the programming work. They had ready-made initial mock-ups, which served us as a starting point for programming. The client was looking for a company that would be able to meet the technological challenges facing the project.
Solution
It was an e-commerce project – they needed a partner to develop a custom-designed packaging creator & e-commerce engine for a small e-commerce business. They already had an advanced product plan, all of the offline facilities, like a card box factory, and also a mockup that served us as a starting point to face all of the tech challenges the project required. All they needed was a trustful developing partner, and they’ve found the right team in our office. There were a loooooot of technical challenges we had to face. The most important thing was creating the 3D Designer with a lot of functionalities. In order to deeply understand the project’s specifics, we decided to divide our work into a few short stages: 1. Identifying all of the crucial elements and challenges 2. Planning the solutions 3. Proofs of Concept 4. Proposing the technology & user flow architecture The most important thing was developing the mechanism that allows de signing the card box, translates the design into a grid, and then sends it right to the factory. The client’s initial plan for the creator was way less advanced when it comes to customization, so – after getting the green light – we decided to add a lot of new functionalities, carefully planned and tested by UX designers. After running the tests, we’ve proposed Vue.js as the main frontend solution and started developing the creator, that turned out to take 50% of the time we planned for this project. When the development was completed, we were helping our client Kalibre in maintaining the UX research and tracking the results to see if there’s any field to improve.
Results
Our work on PackMojo’s product resulted in huge savings for the client, as the Proof of Concept approach allowed us to exclude some initially planned solutions that would turn out as a waste of time and money. Validating the client’s initial vision with the Proof of Concept approach is always a good idea. It doesn’t take long and helps to check quickly if the first assumptions were correct and are worth investing in. In this case, we proved that things should be done in a slightly different way, and it actually SAVED US AND THE CLIENT A LOT OF TIME. Thanks to it, at the beginning we excluded 3 ways to solutions, which if we applied them fully, we would lose a lot of time and money for the development of something that would later turn out to be not working. Sometimes you just need to question the reality to maximize the quality.
